Jason King - The Get Ireland Walking Initiative 'Walking “The Silver Bullet” to health and wellbeing'
Jason joined the Get Ireland Walking Initiative in 2015 as National Programme Manager. Jason’s background is in Community Education in addition to the field of Exercise & Health as a Practitioner. This combination of both backgrounds compliment his current role to educate, engage, and mobilise communities of people and groups in positive physical activity behaviours. This work is carried out through the development of partnerships with key stakeholders, agencies and sporting bodies interested in promoting walking for the physical, social and wellbeing benefits. Get Ireland Walking is Sport Ireland initiative, funded by Healthy Ireland and hosted by Mountaineering Ireland.
The first Get Ireland Walking Strategy and Action Plan 2017-2020 was launched last year with 41 actions arranged into seven thematic areas, 20 Get Ireland Walking led actions and 20 partner led actions. One thematic area is Children and Young People – this area presents spectacular opportunities to engage with schools across Ireland in the promotion and importance of walking throughout the school day “children and young people are our future – we strive to instil, empower and support teachers to promote a culture of walking by providing increased opportunities to engage in walking daily”. This can facilitated through teacher education, by generating supportive environments, taking a whole-school approach in education settings, and advancing new and existing initiatives. Our partnerships, help make this a reality.
